A Weekend on the Rock with Above the Crux
Above the Crux was out doing what we love most—getting people climbing outdoors, building confidence, and sharing incredible experiences on real rock.
Day 1 – Brimham Rocks: Climbing for Everyone
We kicked things off at the stunning Brimham Rocks, where the team—Mid and Donna—ran three fantastic sessions catering to a wide range of ages and abilities.
Our Wild Climbers session got the youngest adventurers (from age 3+) exploring movement, balance, and confidence in a fun, engaging environment. It’s always amazing to see how naturally kids take to climbing when it’s presented as play and exploration.
Next up was our open kids class, where slightly older climbers built on their skills—learning rope work, movement techniques, and problem-solving on real rock. The progression and enthusiasm in this group was brilliant to watch.
We rounded off the day with an adult session, welcoming climbers who were either new to outdoor climbing or looking to build on indoor experience. From first-time rock climbers to those refining technique, it was a great mix of learning, challenge, and achievement.
Day 2 – Bollihope: Progression and Performance
Day two took us over to Bollihope Quarry, where the focus shifted slightly towards progression and performance.
We ran a NICAS Kids session, helping young climbers develop structured skills aligned with the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme. These sessions are a great way for kids to build confidence, independence, and technical understanding in an outdoor setting.
Alongside this, we delivered an adult sport climbing session, working on techniquez route reading and building confidence on bolts. For many, this was their first experience climbing outdoors—and they absolutely smashed it.
More Than Just Climbing
Weekends like this are what Above the Crux is all about—bringing people together, building skills, and creating memorable experiences in incredible locations. Whether it’s a 3-year-old taking their first steps on rock or an adult pushing their comfort zone on lead, every session is about growth, support, and adventure.
If you’re looking to get involved—whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced climber—keep an eye out for our upcoming sessions. We’d love to have you along.
