From indoor to outdoor evenings

There’s a big difference between pulling on plastic and stepping onto real rock for the first time. At Above The Crux, we love helping climbers make that leap—and our recent adult evening session at Scugdale was exactly what that transition is all about.
Tucked away on the edge of the North York Moors, Scugdale offers the perfect introduction to outdoor climbing. Quiet, scenic, and packed with friendly routes, it’s an ideal crag for experienced indoor climbers looking to take things outside for the first time.
This session was designed specifically for those who are confident in a wall environment—comfortable belaying, tying in, and moving on routes—but haven’t yet had the chance to climb on real rock. From the outset, the focus was on building that bridge between indoor and outdoor climbing in a relaxed, supportive environment.
We kicked things off with a short walk-in and a chance to take in the surroundings—already a shift from the gym. Once at the crag, we introduced the fundamentals of outdoor climbing: how anchors are built, what goes into a safe setup, and the key differences from indoor systems. For many, it was the first time seeing how climbs are “created” outside, rather than simply clipped into pre-installed points.
From there, it was time to climb.
Starting on some of Scugdale’s classic beginner-friendly routes, the group quickly began to adapt to the feel of real rock—trusting feet on less obvious holds, reading the route without coloured markers, and managing the slightly different rope systems used outdoors. There’s always a moment where it clicks, and it was great to see that confidence build climb by climb.
As the evening progressed, we introduced more movement coaching and climbing technique specific to outdoor rock—body positioning, balance, and efficient movement becoming even more important without the predictability of indoor holds. There were plenty of breakthroughs, a few pumped forearms, and a lot of smiles.
Beyond the climbing itself, sessions like this are about opening the door to a whole new side of the sport. Outdoor climbing isn’t just about the moves—it’s about the environment, the problem-solving, and the sense of adventure. By the end of the evening, what started as uncertainty had turned into excitement, with many already planning their next trip outside.
At Above The Crux, we specialise in helping climbers progress, whether that’s your first time tying in or your first time stepping onto real rock. If you’ve been climbing indoors and are ready to take it outside, sessions like this are the perfect next step.
Real rock. Real movement. A whole new experience.
